F.F.I.A., Farmington Public Schools and many other
community groups sponsor a Get A
GRIP workshop once a year for students and their
parents. Its goal is to help students and parents understand issues pertinent to growing
up in todays world. Students take part in sessions that deal with peer pressure,
problem solving, conflict resolution and other age related topics. Parents address topics
such as family stress reduction, raising responsible children, setting limits and conflict
resolution.
Some of the GRIP seminars from past years
have been:
- "GRIP: Common Sense for Uncommon
Times" a workshop for parents and their eighth
and ninth-grade students. The focus of the evening event was transitions. Parents had the
opportunity to attend breakout sessions with District social workers, psychologists,
administrators and police liaisons. Students met with Student Roundtable representatives
to discuss ways to have a successful high school experience.
"Get a Kick out of GRIP" a
workshop for parents and their students in grades 6-8 featured nationally known presenter
Fran Kick, famous for his motivational and inspiring presentations. Additionally, every
middle school student in the Farmington Public Schools got a chance to benefit from the
program since special presentations took place at middle schools during the day.
- "GRIP: The Sequel" a workshop for parents and their students in grades 4-8 featured
nationally known presenter C. Kevin Wanzer, who had a frenetic, informative, and very
funny style of getting across his anti-drug and anti-alcohol message.
